HerStory: Revisiting History: Les Jardiniers, Montrouge - França
The artist Panmela Castro presents the exhibition "HerStory: Revisiting History" as part of the official program of the Brazil-France Season 2025 at the Les Jardiniers Cultural Center in Montrouge, France.
Curated by Maybel Sulamita, the exhibition brings together 15 paintings that narrate the journeys of Black women leaders who have made history. Among those honored are emblematic figures from Brazil, France, and Senegal, such as Lélia Gonzalez, Carolina Maria de Jesus, Paulette Nardal, and Safi Faye, among other important references. The exhibition celebrates the struggles and achievements of these women, highlighting the connections between different cultural and social contexts.
The exhibition will also include a residency period at the Les Jardiniers Cultural Center, supported by SAM Art Projects, during which Panmela Castro will create three of the artworks featured in the show, strengthening her connection and exchange with the local community. Each painting will be accompanied by texts (accounts) detailing the journeys of the women portrayed, presenting their lives and historical legacies to the public. In this way, the exhibition fosters an intercultural dialogue on power, equity, and memory, bringing together different perspectives and narratives.
