The main exhibition from the Museu de Arte do Rio makes a stop at the Maison Folie Wazemmes to highlight the history of funk, exploring its sounds, its composers, and its ongoing evolution.
This exhibition traces the origins of funk carioca, not only through its music but also by unveiling its urban and peripheral cultural roots. It delves into the richness of its social and community dimensions while analyzing its aesthetic, political, and economic evolutions. The exhibition also questions the collective imagination shaped around this iconic musical genre.
The public is invited to dive into the heart of funk’s history, revisiting influences such as soul music—imported to Brazil in the 1970s and 1980s—and the bailes de favela, popular neighborhood parties that have become one of the major driving forces of artistic production in Brazil today.
The exhibition explores the presence of funk across various cultural practices, particularly in the field of visual arts, where funk has served as a reference for visibility, political resistance, otherness, and form. A variety of objects tied to the genre’s history are presented alongside an audiovisual profusion of sounds, voices, and gestures. In this way, the public is invited to discover the unique world of funk in all its forms.
